Summer is around the corner which means it’s time for a whole new wardrobe and potentially a new style. This has many of us wondering what to wear and, of course, where to start. Here is a list of the most prominent fashion trends that were seen during fashion week and that you will be seeing everywhere this summer.
Sheer
The sheer materials trend was first introduced for the 2022 season and it has been making a comeback in 2023. Most of the SS23 fashion shows had some sort of sheer element in it. Major fashion brands such as Jacquemus, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace Chanel and Miu Miu have been displaying it in their shows. This season’s trend is all about using see-through materials in every way and shape possible; differing from tank tops to floor length gowns.
Denim
Denim being in style is never a shock. Matter of fact, this fashion trend never seems to be truly OUT of style. There are different ways, however, in which designers style this all-time favorite. The material was seen in all shapes and sizes during the shows: low rise jeans, baggy jeans, denim jackets and even handbags. The most noticeable trend this season, is the usage of denim maxi skirts. Here are some brands that have used denim during the SS23 collections: Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Tom Ford and Jacquemus.
Cut-out
Although cut-outs have been in style for quite some time, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere this summer. The newest addition to this fashion trend is the oblique cut-outs. This specific style was seen everywhere during the SS23 collections, but mostly in shows such as that of Tom Ford, Michael Kors and Saint Laurent. The oblique cut-out is mostly present in maxi dresses, but don’t let that stop you from adding cut-outs to your list of things to buy for summer.
Mermaidcore
What is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of summer? The beach of course! A fashion trend that seems to be showing this beachy aesthetic is that of the so-called ‘mermaidcore’. It has been popping up everywhere lately, with an increased interest in it on social media platforms such as TikTok. Like most other trends, there are many different ways in which this trend can be interpreted; some designers sway more to the use of mermaid dresses and different textures in order to achieve that true ocean vibe. Other designers have let their imaginations run wild and have chosen to use a more literal approach by putting actual sea-like shapes into their show, such as seashells and other beachy objects.
3D Florals
Flowers have always been a staple for the spring and summer seasons, but this year the trend has taken a whole new turn with designers putting 3D flowers on clothing and accessories, and not in the signature Chanel way. The 3D flowers were seen all over and one of the most memorable shows was that of Loewe. Other brands such as; Bottega Veneta, Prada and Emperio Armani were also seen incorporating this new trend in their collection.
Metallics
Metallics have been in style since spring, but it appears this trend will follow us throughout the summer as well. ‘Discocore’ is among the terms that’s used on the internet to describe this particular trend, with brands such as Tom Ford managing to put us in a time machine straight back to the 1970s with the designs. Glittery reflective fabrics seem to be the centerpiece of the SS23 season. The colorful metallic fabrics were also seen in the Versace La Vacanza show. Metallics are giving summer a new aesthetic to experiment with.
Asymmetry
Asymmetry has been dominating the whole of 2023 and we won’t be saying our goodbyes any time soon. Yes, you guessed it: the asymmetrical trend is here to stay. The Burberry show was one among many in which this particular style could be seen. Asymmetrical hems, skirts and dresses will be staples to add to one’s closet. This style adds a touch of playfulness to the trends of summer 2023.
